Freida Kahlo, con e, porque así firmaba ella, sufrió un accidente de tráfico en un autobús a los 18 años en el que se fracturó la columna vertebral, diversas costillas, cuello y pelvis, su pie derecho se dislocó, su hombro se descoyuntó y una barra metálica le atravesó el vientre, introduciéndosele por el costado izquierdo y saliendo por la vagina. Y para vencer el aburrimiento que le provocaba su convalecencia, empezó a pintar.

Mirar sus pinturas es leer su biografía. Retrató todos los acontecimientos que la marcaron en la vida nada fácil que le tocó vivir. Desde su perenne sufrimiento físico a su tormentoso matrimonio con el muralista Diego Rivera, o su aborto.

Aun con todo, era una persona llena de energía, con una fuerza admirable y una marcada personalidad, y consiguió recuperarse y volver a caminar. Era rebelde, desafiante y contradictória.

Justo el año antes de morir, la Galería de Arte Contemporáneo de Méjico le organizó, por primera vez, una importante exposición. La salud de Frida era muy mala por entonces y los médicos le prohibieron asistir. Minutos después de que todos los invitados se encontraran en el interior de la galería se empezaron a oír sirenas. Apareció una ambulancia acompañada de una escolta en motocicleta. Frida Kahlo había sido llevada a su exposición en una cama de hospital. Fue colocada en el centro de la galería y contó chistes, cantó y bebió la tarde entera.
